Lukumamma started its journey in 2014 in Niohori of Rhodes.
Since then, it has been specializing in the production of traditional lukumades. The impetus for the creation of our business was to offer to the general public a dessert that brings euphoria but also to approach through a modern perspective one of the most delicious elements of Greek tradition, the lukumades.
In addition to our lukumades, however, we also offer a variety of different mouthwatering Greek desserts and incredible crepes. All of them prepared with traditional recipes, modern touches and, of course, the freshest and purest ingredients.
We could say that Lukumamma came to fulfill a need in the area, as the lukuma did not exist as a product in Rhodes until that point. Soon, our authentic lukumades captured the hearts of both the local community and travelers, a fact that is undoubtedly attributed to the uniqueness of this authentic homemade pastry but also the welcoming atmosphere of our shop.
To put it simply, every lukuma is a delicious ball of dough, crispy and fluffy at the same time,
made with love and what, in Greece, we call “meraki”.
Having won the love of the local community of Rhodes but also of many visitors from every corner of the world, our goal is to continue to bring joy through our pure and high-quality lukumades. At the same time, our vision is for more and more people to get to know this unique traditional Greek pastry, whose history dates back to Ancient Greece!
Our mission is to offer positive emotions and awaken beautiful memories to those who visit us. Something that would not be possible without all our other delicious desserts, always with a commitment to quality and transparency in the production process in order to ensure the absolute enjoyment and safety of our customers.
One of our favorite aspects of lukumades – besides its unmistakable deliciousness – is clearly its extensive and highly fascinating history.
More specifically, the poet Callimachus mentions that one of the first prizes awarded to the winners of the ancient Olympic Games was usually named “honey token”, which was essentially fried balls of dough coated with plenty of honey, i.e., lukumades. In fact, it was offered to the Olympic champions during their award ceremony along with a wreath made of a wild olive branch (‘Kotinos’). It is believed that this custom was established in honor of a humble baker-athlete who was awarded the title of Olympic champion in the race of the first recorded Olympic Games in 776 BC.
It is extremely interesting that Callimachus’ reference to lukumades is the earliest reference to any kind of pastry in European literature. Today, lukumades are one of the most beloved desserts in Greece and beyond, while in 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, lukumades were offered as a tribute to the first gold medalists in the history of humankind.
